Counting the Days

(& making the days count)

Anyone else feeling tired? 39 teaching days done and 34 days till the Christmas break. It is so common these days to feel overwhelmed in this profession.

No matter how dedicated we are, we are often asked to just make it work; to do so much more with less and less.

This is a gentle reminder to take care of yourself. If you need to take a day off for your own physical or mental wellness, take one. YOU are the one thing in your classroom that you have complete control over. Anything you do for yourself that makes YOU feel better will filter down into your classroom, your relationships, and your ability to do your job.

It is easy to fall into the trap of a never-ending to-do list. Slow down, and focus on accomplishing something each day that you feel good about. It might be one really well-explained math lesson, but it also might be one great conversation and connection with a student that is having a hard time navigating school. It might be a group discussion that you allowed extra time for so EVERY student felt seen and heard, or it might be taking some time to really connect with a colleague about shared goals.

Never forget that what we do MATTERS. We do one of the hardest jobs out there; we teach children. Most people aren’t willing or able to do what we do every day.

Give yourself a pat on the back and make each day count — in a big way, a small way, or a way that makes YOU feel better.

Take care of yourselves and remember there are only 34 teaching days left till our well-deserved break.
